Questions & Answers

WHAT IS ART JOURNALING?

Art journaling is a NO-RULES creative practice. It's about heart not head...getting in touch with what is churning inside of you and letting go of the voices that say, "You're not creative" or "That looks like a kindergartener did that" or "Nice girls don't get angry."

Art journaling is about mixing it up with art supplies: paint, collage, rubber stamps, pencils, pastels, pens, and more. It's about being messy and letting that be OK. It's all about process...working your hands in the paint, feeling the edges of the page, scribbling with a pastel, journaling with a soft pencil.

It's about color and texture and line and words and images. It's about layers and layers and layers of visual information and your life story. Every art journal page is like a piece of your self-portrait. It's rich and dynamic, silly or serious, bright or dark. It's whatever you make it and whatever you want it to be.

Art journaling is about not letting your head dictate what is happening on the page and then experiencing the joy of finding out the meaning once you finish, step back, and take it all in.

It is a contemplative, engaging practice. It is so engaging that once you get started you'll find your mind begging you to return to your art journal to work out the latest crisis or emotional drama, your dream, a phone conversation you had with an old friend, or a memory from your past.

Art journaling is NOT about painting a landscape or doing a realistic figure drawing. It's not skills oriented at all. You don't need to be an artist, or feel artistic, you don't need to know one single thing about making art to find yourself blossoming and growing through the practice of art journaling.

DO I HAVE TO HAVE ART EXPERIENCE OR "BE AN ARTIST" TO TAKE THIS COURSE?

No! This class is for anyone who desires creative expression, who feels the pull of color and texture, who has NEVER taken an art class before but would like to see what it feels like.

DO I HAVE TO BUY A LOT OF EXPENSIVE ART SUPPLIES?

No! There will be a basic supply list given, most of which can be purchased at a local art store or online. Some of the materials will be found/collected from around your house (magazines, mail leftovers, bubblewrap, etc.). You don't need fancy materials to create amazing art journal pages.

ART SUPPLY STORES INTIMIDATE ME. WILL YOU BE GIVING US A SPECIFIC LIST OF MATERIALS TO PURCHASE?

You are NOT alone! Art supply stores are pretty overwhelming for a lot of people. For each of my online classes students receive a specific supply list with links to online suppliers. Most of the materials will be easily found at your local art store and also some larger craft stores. Then, you can take the list with you to a store and have a sales associate help you find everything. Also, I do not get any kickbacks from the companies I suggest, these are just the brands and materials I love.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I DON'T HAVE TIME TO DO AN ASSIGNMENT OR WATCH A VIDEO TUTORIAL?

No problem. The class is designed to be an open exploration of the ideas, techniques and topics. If you miss a lesson, just do it when you can. There is a definite progression, but it's not brain surgery...in other words, it won't be hard to catch up or go back around to review the materials.

WHAT DO I NEED TO TAKE AN INNER ARTIST PLAYDATE COURSE?

You'll need a computer and web connectivity, a Flickr.com account (directions given on registration), a space to set up your work area (your kitchen table is just fine), and some art supplies. You'll also need a camera or smart phone camera for taking photos of your pages to then upload to our Flickr gallery. That part is super easy, no worries!

HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED TO ALLOW FOR THIS CLASS?

How much time you spend is really up to you. Your time for class each week will be a combination of video watching, art making, and computer time (reading prompts and lessons, uploading your photos, and engaging in discussions in our community on Flickr. Depending on how much you want to engage in the art journaling and the conversation, you could spend a few hours to many hours on the program.

CAN I DO THIS ALONE? DO I HAVE TO BE A PART OF THE INNER ARTIST PLAYDATE FLICKR COMMUNITY?

That's a great question. For more on making art in community, please click here. The short answer is that you are completely free to engage in this program the way you want. You can get the materials and work on your own. You can upload your photos to the gallery. You can comment on others' work and ask questions or start discussion topics. It's all up to you. I encourage you to share your voice in our circle, but it is not obligatory at all.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO GET OUT OF INNER ARTIST PLAYDATE E-COURSES?

You will find that you feel more confident with the materials, you are inspired by the work of others, and you will have an amazing visual and tactile record of your life. The best part of all will be reconnecting with your Inner Artist and discovering that you you've had it in you all along: creativity, vision and artistic expression!
